- Re-read your resume the night before to remember key aspects of your background.
- Research the firm. Look to the internet and newspapers to find items of interest that will show the employer you’ve done your homework prior to the interview.
- Practice answering questions in front of a mirror.
- Be sincere and enthusiastic. Show the employer this is the job you want.
- Remember to answer all questions truthfully. A false answer learned later could remove you from consideration.
- Do not bring up topics such as salary, vacation, or benefits in the first interview. The time to negotiate those items is after you’ve impressed them and the employer makes an offer.
- Dress to impress. It is important to know ahead of time the proper attire desired at the interview.
- Show up 10 minutes early for the interview. Do not show up any earlier than this, though. Too early is just as bad as being late.
- Be yourself and have fun in the interview. Don’t be uptight and worried. Appear confident and knowledgeable about the company and industry.
- Get the interviewer to talk about the job, specifically the responsibilities. As he/she states them, you can give detailed examples from your past that satisfy those requirements.
- Ask the interviewer about his/her path of success. Ask what positions they’ve held and what career path this job is on.
- At the end of the interview, thank them for their time, get a business card to send a thank you note, and reiterate your interest in the position. Ask about what the next steps are in the process.
